NEW AIRMIC CHAIRMAN IN PLEDGE TO SPREAD UNDERSTANDING OF RISK

06 Jun 2007

Colin Campbell, the incoming AIRMIC chairman, has made “Communicating Risk Management” his theme for the year.

“As risk management becomes ever more topical, more and more people want to know what it means in practice, and it’s often misused and misunderstood as a result,” he said.

“AIRMIC’s job, as a leading European risk management association, is to bring clarity and define standards.”

Campbell highlighted the recent establishment of Risk Publishing Online, an e-learning subsidiary, as an example of AIRMIC’s heightened role in communicating risk management.

“Risk Publishing Online is aimed mainly at small and medium-sized business. SMEs are in many ways the lifeblood of the economy, and we believe they have much to gain from a more formal appreciation of what risk management is about,” he said.

He pledged strong support for the research, unveiled at the AIRMIC annual conference, into the benefits of Enterprise Risk Management and what constitutes best practice.

“Several top companies and public-sector institutions have agreed to take part. I expect the research, when published, to represent a benchmark,” he said.

“I am also very keen to see claims Key Performance Indicators developed as a long-term project. Our members tell us that they want more information about the record of different insurance companies in this vital area, and I am sure this will help drive up standards.”

Campbell cited work on developing a new AIRMIC internet platform as an important tool in communicating risk management. “It will help us to interact with our members and the outside world.”

Campbell is Head of Risk Management at fashion retailer, Arcadia Group. He was previously with supermarket and food & drink manufacturer, the Argyll Group (later Safeway) and before that spent 10 years with General Accident Insurance Co.

Campbell is keen on Risk Management education and is an associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and a member of the IRM, Business Continuity Institute (BCI) and The International Institute of Risk & Safety Management (IIRSM)

AIRMIC represents risk managers in the UK. Its annual conference, “Competitive Advantage Through Risk Management” is at the QEII Conference Centre, Westminster.
